T. M. Azis (b. 1962)

T. M. Azis is a renowned painter who has earned accolades for sketching human figures interacting with other elements within a composition. Most of his artworks depict ordinary, everyday occurrences with little fixed strategy — the themes of his work often reflect situations he encounters in daily life.

Born in in Trichur, Kerala, this contemporary artist uses bright as well as light contrasting colours on canvas, distinctly symbolising strong individual personas expressing a subtle theatre of visual form.

Education & Work

A graduate in painting from the College of Fine Arts, Kerala, T. M. Azis completed his Master of Fine Arts (Painting) from Jamia Millia Islamia College of Art, New Delhi in .

His canvases depict human figures and objects performing as symbols spinning around allegories. His dexterity in using pastels, acrylic and oil on paper and canvas has distinguished him among contemporary Indian artists. Azis's art is a manifestation of his love for his native place — most of his paintings finely represent states of mind, body, gesture, articulation, and dramatic movement drawn from life and theatre.
