SUHAS ROY: He studied at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Calcutta, and under the tutelage of Prof. S.W. Hayter at the Atelier 17, École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. His works have been exhibited all over the world through prominent exhibitions like the Asian Graphic Prints Traveling Exhibition (USA), the Tokyo Print Biennale (Japan), Contemporary Indian Art (Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary), as well as the 'Wounds' exhibition at the Centre of International Modern Art (CIMA), New Delhi, and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi.
Roy lived and worked in Santiniketan, where he served as the Head of the Department of Painting at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. His exceptional craftsmanship and consummate skill ensured that his richly romantic subjects never veered into overly syrupy or stereotypical portrayals; instead, their patent beauty leans gracefully toward a melancholic elegance. This refined portrayal has much to do with his sensitive artistic choices. The mystical flavor of his artwork arises directly from his materials—his crayons, charcoal, and brush lines carry a profound sensitivity and creative interpretation of the 'unknown'.
